What is A Deep Cleaning?
A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, is a more thorough cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline, where a routine cleaning can't reach.
How does it work?
Your dentist or hygienist uses specialized instruments to scale away hardened tartar from the tooth surface and root, then smooths the root to help your gums reattach and heal. The area is typically numbed first for comfort, and it may be done over one or two visits.

What are the benefits ?
-
Treats and helps reverse early gum disease
-
Removes bacteria hiding beneath the gumline
-
Helps gums reattach more tightly to teeth
-
Prevents bone and tooth loss down the road
FAQS
How do I know if I need a deep cleaning?
Signs like bleeding or swollen gums, bad breath, or gum recession can point to a need for deep cleaning. Your dentist will measure the pockets around your teeth during an exam to determine if scaling and root planing is right for you.
Is a deep cleaning painful?
We numb the area before we begin, so most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure. Some mild soreness or sensitivity afterward is normal and usually resolves within a few days.
How long does recovery take?
Most patients are back to normal activities the same day. Gums may feel tender for a few days, and we'll give you simple aftercare instructions to support healing.
Will insurance cover a deep cleaning?
Many dental plans cover scaling and root planing, especially when gum disease is diagnosed. Our team will help verify your benefits and walk you through any out-of-pocket costs beforehand.
