East Madison Dental Completes Successful Dental Mission Trip to India

East Madison Dental’s team of five dental professionals returned this week from a successful dental mission in India.

Led by East Madison Dental owner and general dentist, Dr. Narpat Jain, the group included a hygienist, two dental assistants, East Madison Dental’s office manager, and a registered nurse.

“It was an incredible experience,” said Dr. Jain, “We were a small team, but we provided service to almost 40 patients a day—patients that really needed our services, many of whom had never received dental care before. It was a very successful trip.”

While East Madison Dental has been providing free dental services to its local community for the last three years with Free Dental Day, this was its first international trip.

Dental Assistant Maria Nayan felt that the trip really opened her eyes the how much dental services are lacking in many parts of the world. “I really felt the importance of being there because the patients really needed dental help. There were people suffering from infections that could have become fatal in a short time. We were able to treat the infection and get rid of their pain.”

In all, the group treated 95 patients, including 65 cleanings with exam and x-rays, 31 fillings, 36 extractions, and 16 consultations where they were able to recommend root canal, orthodontic and other treatments for patients.

The group operated the dental clinic out of Kalpurnam Hospital in Khichan, India, located in the northwest of India. The trip was organized through the international non-profit, International Human Benefit Services, based out of New Jersey. IHBS provides support to a local organization in Khichan that runs the hospital, along with a bilingual school, several health centers, and mobile health units throughout Khichan. The hospital provides care to hundreds of Khichan residents, specializing in eye surgeries, dialysis services, and cleft-lip surgeries for the very poor.

The team would like to thank the generous dental vendors who made this trip possible through their donations of materials. These include Schick by Dentsply Sirona for the donation of 3 x-ray sensors, Matt O’Malley with Henry Schein, Colgate, David Kleinman with Newark Dental-Pemco, Dental Studies Institute of New Jersey, Ultradent Products, Inc., and Kerr Dental Supplies.
