What is pocket depth reduction?
Pocket depth reduction is a procedure that treats the deep pockets that form between teeth and gums due to advanced gum disease, helping gums reattach more closely to teeth.
How does it work?
Your dentist folds back the gum tissue to thoroughly clean out bacteria and tartar from deep pockets, then may smooth irregular bone surfaces before securing the gum tissue back in place for tighter reattachment.

What are the benefits ?
-
Reduces harmful bacteria hiding deep below the gumline
-
Helps gums reattach more closely to teeth
-
Makes future cleaning at home and in-office more effective
-
Slows or stops the progression of periodontal disease
FAQS
How do I know if I need pocket depth reduction?
Your dentist measures the pockets around each tooth during a periodontal exam. Pockets deeper than what a standard cleaning can reach often signal the need for this procedure.
Is the procedure painful?
The area is fully numbed, so the procedure itself is comfortable. Some soreness during recovery is normal and typically improves within about a week.
How long does recovery take?
Most patients heal within one to two weeks, with gums continuing to tighten and improve over the following weeks and months.
Will I still need regular cleanings after this procedure?
Yes, and typically more frequent ones. Patients who've had pocket depth reduction usually move to a periodontal maintenance schedule, often every three to four months, to keep gums healthy long-term.
