The First Visit Jitters Are Real. Here's How We Handle Them.

Whether you're brand new to the area, finally getting back on track after a gap in care, or simply looking for a dental home that feels like more than a revolving door, your first appointment sets the tone for everything. At East Madison Dental, we've welcomed new patients across our Tenafly, Englewood, and Dumont locations for over 27 years, and we've learned something important: the more you know before you walk in, the easier the whole thing is.

So here's exactly what a new patient dental visit with us looks like. No glossing over the awkward parts.

Before You Even Sit in the Chair

The first step happens before your appointment. We'll ask you to complete your new patient paperwork ahead of time, so your first visit isn't spent filling out forms in the waiting room. This includes your health history, any current medications, insurance information, and dental concerns you want to address.

That health history isn't just a formality. Your overall health and your oral health are more connected than most people realize, and knowing what's going on with the rest of your body helps us give you a much more complete picture of your mouth.

A few things worth bringing to your first visit:

  • A list of any current medications or supplements

  • Your insurance card, if applicable

  • Any recent dental X-rays from a previous provider, if you have them

  • Notes on concerns you want to talk about, even if they seem small

What Actually Happens During a Comprehensive New Patient Exam

A new patient visit is more thorough than a routine checkup, and intentionally so. We're not just cleaning your teeth and sending you on your way. We're getting to know your mouth from scratch, and that takes a little more time and attention.

Here's what's typically included:

  • A full set of X-rays. These give us a view of what's happening beneath the surface: bone levels, the spaces between teeth, any developing issues that aren't visible to the naked eye. If you've had recent X-rays from another practice, we may be able to work from those.

  • A comprehensive oral exam. Your dentist will examine every tooth, your gums, your bite, and the soft tissues of your mouth, including your tongue, cheeks, and the roof and floor of your mouth.

  • An oral cancer screening. It's quick, painless, and important. We do it for every new patient, every time.

  • A periodontal assessment. We check the health of your gums by measuring the spaces between your gums and teeth. This is where those pocket depth numbers come in, which we've written about separately.

  • A conversation. Not a lecture. We want to hear what's been bothering you, what your goals are, and what your experience with dentistry has been like. That context shapes everything.

Will I Get a Cleaning at My First Visit?

This is one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is: it depends.

In many cases, yes, a professional cleaning is included as part of your first appointment. But if your exam or X-rays reveal that your gums need a more specific type of attention before a standard cleaning is appropriate, we'll talk through that with you and explain the reasoning clearly. You'll never leave wondering why something did or didn't happen.

What Comes After the Exam

Once we've done a full assessment, your dentist will walk you through what they found. Not in clinical shorthand, but in plain terms you can actually use. If there's anything that needs attention, we'll explain it, show you if that's helpful, and outline your options.

If everything looks healthy, we'll set you up with a schedule for routine care going forward. If there are things to address, we'll prioritize them with you, not for you.

You will never leave your first appointment with a list of treatment recommendations and no explanation. That's not how we do things.

A Note for Patients Who Haven't Been in a While

If it's been a few years since your last dental visit, you are in genuinely good company, and you won't be judged here. We've seen it all, and our job isn't to make you feel bad about the past. It's to figure out where things stand right now and help you move forward.

The best thing you can do is show up. We'll take care of the rest.
